Cummins engines powering cotton farm

Tim and Marney O’Brien own and manage 40,500 hectares (100,000 acres) of irrigated and dryland farm property in the Pilliga and Cryon regions of north-west New South Wales, Australia. In just over 12 months, the O’Briens installed nine Cummins power units as they upgraded and developed the irrigation process for 4,050 hectares (10,000 acres) of their land for cotton farming. In addition, they have approval to develop a further 1,012 hectares (2,500 acres) for cotton.

Faultless performance with Cummins engines

The Cummins power units have performed faultlessly to date in their irrigation pumping duties. All feature Cummins QSL9 engines rated 300 hp at 2100 rpm with high peak torque of 1000 lb ft (1355 Nm) at 1400 rpm. The electronic 8.9-litre engine has established a best-in-class record for reliability, durability and fuel efficiency in a wide range of industrial, automotive and marine applications and was a clear choice to meet the O’Brien’s requirements.

“We wanted an engine that was very reliable and a power unit that was a turnkey set-up,” says Tim O’Brien when discussing the selection of the Cummins engine. “The 300 hp engine was also the best fit for the pumps we’re using.” He points out the Cummins QSL established its performance credentials early when one engine ran continuously for around three weeks, filling a 3000-megalitre (1.0-billion-litre) storage dam by itself.

Continuous operation in extreme temperatures

The QSL9 power unit installations feature a heavy-duty cooling package which allows continuous operation in ambient temperatures of more than 50°C/122°F. This is ideal for the O’Brien’s farming operation, since temperatures in Queensland reached a new state record of more than 45°C for ten consecutive days this year.

Automation, including remote control of the Cummins power units, is the next step for the O’Briens who are keen to invest in new technologies as part of a financially robust business that can support agricultural practices into the future.
